Life in a London Start Up
In: London
5 Oct 2008I have a pretty soft spot for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I read it, of course, for enjoyment when I was young; I read it academically in a Victorian literature class; and I based my novel for my novel-writing course at uni on the original plot, creating a modern re-imagining of Alice set in the internet age (don’t expect to see it on bookshelves any time soon – it’s only half finished and I’m not sure when I’m going to get back to it).
I also really like Tim Burton. I think this started when my sister, and some ridiculously young age, decided that The Nightmare before Christmas was her favourite movie and deserved to be watched every single day for three months. His newer films are pretty awesome too.
So imagine how excited I am to hear that Tim Burton is filming a live version of Alice in Wonderland with Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter. They’ve just started filming here in the UK (I missed the extras casting call by a few weeks which would have been fun!) and there have already been some leaked pictures of Mia Wasikowska, the actress playing Alice:

Although certain die-hard fans of the original are already nervously speculating about why Alice seems to be on a boat (a scene not taken from the text), I’m pretty excited to see how this turns out. As someone who has already subjected Carroll’s classic text to a modern reworking (and with no where near the skill or creativity that Burton is sure to manage) I’m just excited to see another take on one of my favourite stories.
Alice is set to be released in March of 2010, and the cast is also set to include Michael Sheen and Matt Lucas. Helena Bonham Carter has also been seen around the set and is rumoured to be playing a role as well.

THis is going to suck. Burton is going to put his happy family kid friendly spin on this nightmarish tale of the bizarre and macabre.
I call shenanigans.

To above poster–then you can go so Marilyn Manson’s version. You know he’s making one, right? That should fill your need for the bizarre and the macabre.

The original text of Alice’s adventures through the looking glass did contain a chapter called ‘wool and water’ in which alice and a sheep/white queen are in a boat
I Don't like Alice

I really don’t like the actor playing Alice. To tell you the truth she looks nothing like the real one. If she is the actor then this is gonna suck.

What exactly do you mean by “real one” you understand the line between fiction and fact I hope.

Anyone play the video game “Alice” by American McGee? I can see these two colliding.. in a very good way.

The “real” one is Alice Pleasance Liddell, the inspiration for “Alice in Wonderland”. It was to this girl, and her sisters, that Lewis Carroll first told the story. She was a brunette.

I think it will be a great blend of Tim Burton sick twisted humor with a classic story that already appears to have been written while during a nice cocaine adventure. Throw in Depp “who i love anyways” who seems to always create a great persona for his characters it should be a good movie. I myself would also like to see Johnny do the cher chur “sp” cat as well, but that’s just my idea.

What a perfect little demented movie for Tim Burton to get his hands on. Honestly though, the mad hatter should be Christopher Walken … duh!

The boat scene may be explained by real life events. I believe the young Alice that Carroll wrote the stories for often accompanied him on boat and barge rides. He was a friend of her family.
I am really looking forward to the Burton Alice!

I actually was telling my boyfriend a few years ago that I thought Burton should do Alice in Wonderland so, naturally, I’m thrilled to hear the news! I can’t wait to see this movie.

Is this a joke? Are you guys insane? Tim Burton needs to go away. Wait, wait… let me guess, he’s going to make a spooky version of something that was already done. Oh wow! What a shocker, like everything else he does! How does this guy get budget for anything anymore??

Hi guys, This message goes out to those who think this film will suck, you are so wrong its going to be amazing. I was an extra in the film and I can tell you that Tim will not disappoint. I’ve watched him direct, listend to him as he explaind how he wants things to look, guys this film will be played out in the style it should be considering how this fucked up story came about, with massave detail paid to the most inconspicuous object. Depp and all the other actors will bring the rest. Trust me the film will satisfy all thoes who watch it young and old.
never again
